Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Madrid rises the Parroquia Santa Maravillas de Jesús. It stands as a testament to a remarkable woman, Saint Maravillas de Jesús. She was born María de las Maravillas Pidal y Chico de Guzmán, right here in Madrid in 1891. Her family, the Marquises of Pidal, held close ties with the Church. Her father even served as Spain’s ambassador to the Holy See. Parroquia Santa Maravillas de Jesús subtly reminds us of her privileged upbringing. It contrasts sharply with the path of humble service she chose.

From a young age, Maravillas felt a strong spiritual pull. She devoted her adolescence and youth to charitable work. She aided those less fortunate, foreshadowing her lifelong dedication to service. Drawn to the writings of Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross, she found solace and inspiration in their mystical experiences. In 1919, she entered the Discalced Carmelites in El Escorial. She embraced her new life and took the name Maravillas de Jesús.

A pivotal moment came in 1923. While praying, she felt inspired to establish a Carmelite convent. The location? Cerro de los Ángeles, the geographical center of Spain, marked by a monument to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. With the support of the Bishop of Madrid-Alcalá, the dream began to take shape. In 1926, the Parroquia Santa Maravillas de Jesús convent at Cerro de los Ángeles opened its doors, with Maravillas as priora.

The Spanish Civil War brought turmoil and tested Maravillas’ faith. She courageously requested permission from Pope Pius XI to defend the Sacred Heart monument, should it be desecrated. Forced from their convent, Maravillas and her community endured imprisonment, hardship, and threats in Madrid before finding refuge in Salamanca. In 1939, they returned to a devastated Cerro de los Ángeles, where Maravillas, once again, served as priora.

Undeterred by adversity, Maravillas continued to establish Carmelite convents throughout Spain, even extending her reach to India. In 1961, she founded the convent in La Aldehuela, Madrid, where she spent her final years. Always driven by compassion, she oversaw the construction of houses, a school, and a church. She tirelessly supported seminarians and established a foundation for ailing nuns. She even purchased a house in Madrid for Carmelites needing medical care.

Her life was a testament to her deep faith. Even amidst her administrative duties, she maintained a profound mystical connection with God. Her final words, “What happiness to die a Carmelite!”, epitomized her lifelong devotion. Canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2003, Saint Maravillas de Jesús’s legacy lives on. The Parroquia Santa Maravillas de Jesús stands as a symbol of her unwavering faith, enduring spirit, and boundless love for God and humanity.
