The school’s journey began as yangchunguisuk. It was sponsored by Queen Eom in Jongno. The Japanese occupation temporarily closed it. But it reopened after nine years. Remarkably it produced many Korean independence fighters. Even national hero Sohn Kee-Chung a famous marathon runner was a student.
The Korean War brought further challenges. Yangcheon High School relocated south. It returned to Seoul after the war ended. In 1988 the school moved to its current location in Mok-dong. This was a significant relocation from its previous building in Man-li dong.
Yangcheon High School has unique traditions. Its annual rugby match with Pai chai high school is legendary. This ‘Baeyangjeon’ or ‘Yangbae Jeon’ has continued since 1946. It’s a rivalry steeped in history and school spirit. Even the school’s hiking club is renowned. It’s one of Korea’s oldest. In 2005 its members climbed Mount Everest celebrating the school’s centennial.
