New Calvary Cemetery

Opened in 1851, New Calvary Cemetery isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to Boston’s history. New Calvary Cemetery is one of four cemeteries maintained by the Boston Catholic Cemetery Association. Originally, the Association was formed by 215 members. Their goal was simple. They wanted to create a final resting place for their loved ones. The first burial under the Association actually took place in 1841, at St. Mary’s in Dorchester. That’s even before New Calvary Cemetery itself existed. The Association has overseen over 340,000 burials. That speaks volumes about its significance to the community. New Calvary Cemetery’s gates are open 365 days a year. The hours vary slightly with the seasons. From mid-April to mid-October, you can visit between 7:00 am and 6:30 pm. During the colder months, from mid-October to mid-April, the gates are open from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. If you’re interested in visiting St. Mary’s, you’ll need to call the Mt.
