Have you ever walked through a place steeped in history? Welcome to Ober-Eschbach a charming Stadtteil of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. Right here before you lies a place where history whispers through the cobblestones.
Ober-Eschbach’s story unfolds over centuries. Archaeological finds hint at Roman settlements. Imagine the legions marching through what is now this quiet town. The Lorscher Codex mentions Aschebach as early as 772. This is amazing. However it’s unclear if this refers to Ober- or Nieder-Eschbach or even another place altogether.
By 1219 Ober-Eschbach had its own parish. “Superiori Askebach” the documents read. This was a significant step for the small settlement.The Eschbach stream provided water and life. The area has even seen the economic use of salt springs since 773. A testament to the land’s resources.
The medieval church was more than just a place of worship. It was a Wehrkirche a fortified church. Imagine its thick walls protecting villagers from invaders. The church’s patron was St Peter. His keys symbolise the town’s history. These keys are even on the unofficial Ober-Eschbach coat of arms designed in 1989. The coat of arms also shows the Eschbach stream and an ash branch. The ash tree gave the stream its name.
The 15th century saw the construction of a ring wall. Fragments remain near the new school. This wall speaks of a time when Ober-Eschbach needed protection. The town also belonged to powerful families like the Lords of Eppstein. In 1487 it even became a Homburg exclave under Count Philipp I of Hanau-Münzenberg.
Life in Ober-Eschbach centered around agriculture. Farms and mills thrived. In 1593 Count Philipp Ludwig II introduced the Reformed faith. This marked a turning point in Ober-Eschbach’s religious life. A school was established in the same year. The Thirty Years’ War brought destruction. The parish house fell in 1630.
Later the area saw the rise of Lutheran services and a dedicated church built between 1728 and 1731. This church Zur Himmelspforte or Church to the Heavenly Gate still stands today. The building incorporated features from other Hanau churches. For example a pulpit from the Johanneskirche. This underlines Ober-Eschbach’s connections to the wider region.
In the 19th century stocking weaving became an important source of income. The Hessischer Hof inn emerged from the old Oberhof. It was an important place for the community. The area joined the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In 1823 the Lutheran and Reformed congregations unified. This was a big step forward. They chose the new Lutheran church as their place of worship.
The 20th century brought the construction of new housing areas. A new school opened in 1957. Ober-Eschbach became a Stadtteil of Bad Homburg in 1971. This is an important moment. This was part of Hessen’s regional reform. High-tech businesses like Hewlett-Packard arrived. They chose Ober-Eschbach. This greatly stimulated the area’s economy.
