Stepping into the heart of Longsight, we find the Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre. This isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a lifeline, a beacon of hope, especially during challenging times. The Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre, also known as Dar-ul-Ulum Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre, plays a vital role in Manchester’s Muslim community. It serves as a central gathering point for those following the Barelvi Sufi tradition. Other Muslim branches are also welcome here. The Centre’s location is a bit intriguing. It’s situated at St. John’s Church on St. Johns Road in Longsight. The Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre is more than just a mosque. It’s a place of learning and social support. The centre offers Islamic education, making it a hub for both lifelong learners and newcomers to Islam. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre stepped up to address a critical need. Local journalist Shahzad Mirza noticed a growing issue of food insecurity in Longsight. He used social media to reach out. He asked residents if they required hot meals. The response was overwhelming. Initially, around 50 people responded. As word spread, the number swelled to over 300 daily. This demonstrated the pandemic’s significant economic impact on the Longsight area. Many businesses closed, leaving residents jobless and struggling to afford basic necessities. The Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre partnered with the local supermarket Appna. They transformed a small function room within the mosque into a makeshift food bank. Volunteers prepared and distributed food packs. These packs included milk, fruit, tinned goods, and hot curries. They served anyone in need, regardless of their background or faith. They also delivered meals to vulnerable and elderly residents in surrounding areas. Leftover food was given to the homeless along Stockport Road. The initiative, initially intended for Ramadan, continued due to overwhelming need and community support. The Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre has provided over 10,000 meals, demonstrating remarkable community spirit and resilience. They have even had to turn away volunteers due to social distancing restrictions. While funding remains a concern, they continue to seek support. They rely on donations, council funding, and help from charities like Muslim Hand. This ensures they can continue serving this surprisingly large, hidden hungry population within their community. The Qadria Jilania Islamic Centre truly embodies the spirit of compassion and service, highlighting the power of community in times of crisis.
