Why did two churches and a sisterhood decide to merge and build a new home in Eppendorf? The story of the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche Bethanien begins not here, but in the hearts of two congregations and a dedicated sisterhood. The Eben-Ezer-Kirche in Eppendorf and the Christuskirche in Fuhlsbüttel, both part of the Evangelisch-methodistische Church, felt a pull towards unity. They found a kindred spirit in the Diakonissen Schwesternschaft Bethanien. Together, they envisioned a shared space, a new beginning. This vision materialized in 2015 with the construction of the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche Bethanien, right here in the Bethanien-Höfe. The church’s name, “Bethanien,” honors the sisterhood that played such a crucial role in its creation. It stands as a testament to the power of community and shared faith. But the story goes deeper than bricks and mortar. The church houses a unique treasure, a link to the past. The organ, built by Alfred Führer in 1961, wasn’t originally intended for this space. It once filled the chapel of the old Bethanien sisterhood’s motherhouse, consecrated in 1904. When the old motherhouse was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Bethanien-Höfe, the organ found a new home in the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche Bethanien. It’s a symbol of continuity, a harmonious blend of old and new. The Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche Bethanien is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant hub of community life, offering a wide array of activities. From Sunday school for children to senior gatherings and various women’s groups, the church embraces people of all ages. It’s a place where faith is lived, not just spoken, reflecting the Methodist tradition of practical service and community engagement.
