In 1912, a beacon of faith emerged in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, originally named Mount Lebanon, started its journey in a humble “Old Folks Home.” Imagine the scene: the fresh scars of slavery still raw, the lowlands bearing the marks of a devastating flood. Yet, amidst this hardship, a small group of believers gathered, led by Reverend Frank Rose. Their prayers filled the simple space, marking the beginning of Greater Mount Lebanon’s legacy. The church’s first revival saw six men converted, a testament to the burgeoning faith within the community. Later, under Pastor S.S. Butler, the church began to flourish. Sis. Gertrude Pilate bestowed the name Mount Lebanon, a moniker that would evolve with the church’s growth. As the congregation expanded, a Deacon’s Ministry was formed, adding structure and support to the growing community. In March 1914, another revival swept through Mount Lebanon, resulting in 21 conversions. This influx of new members led to the creation of a Sunday School and other vital ministries. Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church continued to thrive over the years. Its name changed in 1955, reflecting its expanding reach and influence. The church has witnessed numerous renovations and been guided by many devoted leaders, each adding their unique contribution to its rich tapestry. Today, Greater Mount Lebanon Baptist Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It continues to serve as a spiritual haven for its community, carrying forward the legacy begun over a century ago in a simple “Old Folks Home.”
