Doesn’t that Sagemännle-Wegweiser Sculpture capture your imagination? It’s more than just a wooden figure. It’s a directional guide and a work of art.

This particular Sagemännle-Wegweiser was created by the talented wood artist Thomas Rees. He worked on it from July 11th to 16th in 2009. The location was the Waldsee depot of the forestry office.

Bernhard Friedmann, a forester, provided a Douglas fir piece for the project. It was 2.50 meters high and approximately 85 cm in diameter. The fir had a steep branch growing upwards from the trunk. Foresters considered this unsuitable for industrial processing.

However, Thomas Rees saw potential in it. He turned the tree upside down. The steep branch pointed downwards and he carved it into a witch’s broom. This witch accompanies the Sagemännle, providing company.

The massive Sagemännle-Wegweiser serves as a signpost. It stands at a crossroads in the Barbarawald forest. It guides visitors to the Sagemännle. The sculpture’s outstretched finger and axe point the way to the right.

Thomas Rees has created something truly special. The Sagemännle-Wegweiser is not only a practical guide. It is a testament to the beauty of art and the creative spirit. The Sagemännle-Wegweiser combines art and functionality. It reflects Freiburg’s enchanting landscape. It invites everyone to explore the Black Forest.
