Lost in thought, have you ever considered how history whispers through the very fabric of a place? You are standing before the Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque. It marks a place of profound significance in Berlin’s Hansaviertel. This memorial is not just a marker. It’s a window into a painful past.

The Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque located in the Hansaplatz underground station opened to the public in January 2014. It was a deeply moving moment for those who initiated and realized the project. Inaugurating the revised Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque four years later was no less emotional.

The Bürgerverein Hansaviertel e.V. with a group of American Jews inaugurated it. They were in Berlin for the “Germany Close up” exchange program. Many Hansaviertel citizens representatives of the BVG and the Proft company also attended. The LOTTO Foundation provided financial support for the revision.

Not far from here on Levetzowstraße stood one of Berlin’s largest synagogues. The Nazis transformed it into a collection camp in 1941. This was for Berlin Jews about to be deported to extermination camps. Over 32000 people were held there.

Tatjana Ruge researched 1030 names of Jewish residents in the Hansaviertel. Katja van Dyck-Taras designed the inscription board. It lists these names. This visualizes the tragic fate of these residents.

The Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque is a glass pane. In 2014 a film was applied to it. Now it consists of two 5 mm thick panes. It is made of laminated safety glass. The names of the 1030 Jewish residents are printed in the middle.

Sabine Röhm is a pastor. She spoke at the inauguration. She quoted the 5th book of Moses. She said tell your children what happened. Give them your values faith and traditions. Share your story your memories and those of your people. Let them live on from generation to generation. Do not conceal anything. Tell also the terrible that has happened.

Consider this: each name etched on the Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque represents a life. It represents a family a story. It was abruptly cut short by the horrors of the Holocaust.

The Fenster der Erinnerung Plaque stands as a reminder. It stands as a call to remember. It urges us to never forget the lessons of the past. It also ensures that such atrocities never happen again. It is a memorial and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It stands in the face of unimaginable darkness. Take a moment to reflect on the weight of history here. Then consider your own role in shaping a more just and compassionate future.
