“Progressive use of technology in worship services.” That’s a phrase that perfectly encapsulates Somang Presbyterian Church in Seoul. Somang Presbyterian Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a vibrant community hub in the Gangnam district.
Established as one of the largest churches in South Korea, Somang Presbyterian Church has a rich history. It started humbly in 1977. Eleven church members met for prayer including Rev. Kyung Sun-hee. They gathered and began the church’s journey. In 1978, they held their first worship service. It took place in a shopping center. The shopping center was located in the Hyundai Apartment in Apkujung-dong. Somang Presbyterian Church moved to its current location in 1981. Here they built a dedicated worship building.
Somang Presbyterian Church is known for embracing modern technology. This enhances the worship experience. The church recently renovated its second sanctuary. This reinvention drew attention from both congregants and sound engineers. Star Networks’ Jung Hak Kim and Seokwoo Choi chose a TW AUDiO ELLA audio system. It was a significant decision for Somang Presbyterian Church. Investing in new technology during a pandemic wasn’t easy. But it was seen as an investment for the next generation.
Two L-R hangs of twelve ELLA6 enclosures now cover the sanctuary. They are supported by two S32 subwoofers. These subs are discreetly placed where organ speakers once stood. The S32’s cardioid preset minimizes rearward lobing. The entire system is powered by two Powersoft T604DSP and one Powersoft T602DSP. The sleek design of the ELLA system blends well. It perfectly fits the venue’s aesthetic. It is almost invisible when compared to the old PA system. The congregation enjoys clear sightlines to the LED screen. The new system delivers better intelligibility and coverage. It achieves this with a third of the SPL of its predecessor.
The pastor described the upgrade as huge. Church musicians feel like they’re performing in a concert hall. Somang Presbyterian Church is also known for its socio-political connections. Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak serves as an elder. Many prominent figures of his government attend Somang Presbyterian Church.
However, the church has faced controversies. In 2011, ministers fought violently. This was allegedly due to theological differences. A producer investigating Somang Presbyterian Church was replaced. Concerns arose about censorship and political influence. A former subordinate minister was arrested for banking fraud. A lobbyist affiliated with the church was involved in a bribery case.
Despite these challenges, Somang Presbyterian Church continues to be a significant institution. It is a landmark in Seoul’s Gangnam district. Somang Presbyterian Church looks to the future. It does so with a commitment to faith and innovation.
