Alum – the unlikely hero of Hurlet. That’s where our story begins, in a village once humming with the rhythm of miners’ boots and the clatter of machinery. Hurlet, a name whispered on the winds of industry, nestled near Barrhead. Hurlet wasn’t just about coal. Yes, coal powered the engines of Glasgow’s burgeoning industries, and Hurlet played its part. But the real treasure lay beneath the coal seams. It was alum, a seemingly unassuming mineral. Copperas too, both essential ingredients in the vibrant world of textile dyeing. Imagine the rich hues of silks and wools, the deep indigos and fiery scarlets, all thanks to Hurlet’s hidden bounty. This discovery transformed Hurlet. It wasn’t just a mining village anymore, it was a key player in the textile trade. Hurlet’s alum and copperas helped paint the world in vibrant colors. Sir Isaac Holden, the inventor, was born in Hurlet in 1807. He likely witnessed firsthand the transformative power of these minerals. He grew up amidst the hustle and bustle of the mines, surrounded by the very substances that fueled industrial progress. Sadly, much of Hurlet’s physical presence faded with the expansion of the A726 road. This dual carriageway, slicing through the heart of the village, paved over a piece of history. Yet, the story of Hurlet remains, a testament to the power of industry and the unexpected treasures hidden beneath our feet.
