Bonnie Brae, meaning “pleasant hill” in Gaelic, lives up to its name. The neighborhood was envisioned by George W. Olinger. He wanted to recreate the charm of a peaceful Scottish village. He hired landscape architect Saco DeBoer in 1923 to bring his vision to life. Bonnie Brae Park is the heart of this charming neighborhood. The streets curve and meander around the park, lined with beautiful homes. The architecture is diverse, ranging from Tudor and Spanish to Bauhaus and Postmodern. This eclectic mix reflects the neighborhood’s development over several decades. Construction began in the 1920s and continued through the Great Depression and World War II, finally completing around 1956. One of the last original designs you might see is the one-story ranch, often built with blonde brick, north of Bonnie Brae Boulevard. This style is sometimes referred to as Mid-Century or Post-War ranch. The park itself is a gathering place for residents. It’s a place where children play and neighbors chat, fostering a strong sense of community. Bonnie Brae also boasts a vibrant business district with local shops, restaurants, and cafes.
