In 1975 a vision took root. Rev Charles L Stokes and a few dedicated followers dreamed of Grace Covenant Baptist Church. Their goal was simple to create a welcoming place of worship. This was the beginning of Grace Covenant’s rich legacy.
Grace Covenant Baptist Church quickly gained momentum. In December 1976 the church officially organized. This momentous occasion took place at 775 Hunter Street. This building was the old West Hunter Street Church. Rev Ralph Abernathy had served as pastor there. Grace Covenant eventually acquired this historic building.
The early years saw remarkable growth. By 1978 Grace Covenant boasted approximately 650 members. Its annual budget reached a significant $128000. The church’s influence expanded beyond its walls. Pastor Stokes was a key figure in the Vine City Ministries and the CBC. Grace Covenant played an active role in Atlanta’s social and political landscape.
A pivotal moment came in 1976. The grand opening services were remarkable. Dr Martin Luther King Sr. preached at the morning service. The late Pastor Ralph Abernathy delivered the afternoon sermon. These powerful figures lent their support to this burgeoning church.
The baton of leadership passed from Rev Stokes to Rev Vincent Thomas in 2003. Rev Thomas’s connection to Grace Covenant was deep. He had met Rev Stokes while dating his daughter Kameshia. Rev Stokes served as a mentor and spiritual father to Rev Thomas. Rev Thomas became the first assistant pastor under Rev Stokes. This appointment marked a significant milestone in Grace Covenant’s history.
Rev Thomas’s installation as pastor was an important event. Dr Aaron Parker was the speaker. Mayor Shirley Franklin offered greetings. Bishop Dale C Bronner and Dr Nina Bronner also attended. Rev Stokes became Pastor Emeritus. He continued to share his wisdom and support the church until his passing.
Grace Covenant is more than just a building. It is a vibrant community. It is a place of spiritual growth and outreach. Grace Covenant continues its mission. The church strives to serve those in need and spread the message of Christ. The legacy of faith and service continues today at Grace Covenant Baptist Church. It stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders and leaders.
