Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari was born in 810 CE in Bukhara modern Uzbekistan. He was Persian. Al-Bukhari’s early life was marked by both tragedy and prodigious intellect. His father Ismail a scholar of hadith died when Al-Bukhari was an infant.
Raised by his mother Al-Bukhari showed an exceptional memory. It was a trait that would define his life’s work. By the age of sixteen he had memorized countless hadith. These are narrations about the Prophet Muhammad’s life and teachings.
Young Al-Bukhari traveled extensively to Mecca with his family. He sought knowledge from the most eminent scholars of his time. His journeys took him across the Abbasid Caliphate. He visited Syria Kufa Basra Egypt Yemen and Baghdad. Al-Bukhari learned from masters like Ahmad ibn Hanbal Ali ibn al-Madini and Ishaq ibn Rahwayh.
