These are Protestant Theology, Languages, Literature and Media (split into two departments), History, Philosophy, Studies in Culture and Arts, Asia-Africa Studies, and Religions. Nearly 6,800 students currently navigate the halls, engaging with 74 bachelor’s and master’s programs. Over 130 professors and 300 instructors guide them on their academic journeys. The Studium generale requirement further broadens their horizons. It encourages exploration beyond their chosen fields and fosters critical engagement with knowledge itself. Master’s programs at the Fakultät der Geisteswissenschaften offer deeper dives into specialized areas. Building on the foundation of the bachelor’s degree, students hone their skills and pursue independent research. The graduate school offers structured doctoral programs. These programs provide funding and positions for those who wish to further their academic pursuits. The Fakultät der Geisteswissenschaften understands the demands of modern life. Blended learning concepts are integrated into all degree programs. Part-time study is available in almost all programs, recognizing the growing trend of combining work and education. The Master of Arts in Sign Language Interpretation marks the faculty’s first fully recognized part-time degree program. The roots of the Fakultät der Geisteswissenschaften run deep into Hamburg’s history, stretching back to the Renaissance. The city library, founded in 1479, and the Akademisches Gymnasium, established in 1613, stand as important predecessors. The General Lecture Series, initiated by Johann Georg Büsch in 1764, further shaped the city’s intellectual landscape. Hamburg’s rich cultural tapestry, woven with museums, collections, theaters, and concert halls, all contributed to the flourishing of the humanities. The founding of the Colonial Institute at the beginning of the 20th century saw the establishment of several humanities professorships. These focused on non-European languages and cultures. In 1919, the first democratically elected parliament founded Universität Hamburg. Luminaries like Ernst Cassirer, Aby Warburg, Erwin Panofsky, Agathe Lasch, Emil Wolff, and Bruno Snell shaped the early years. They helped to forge the faculty’s international reputation.
