Whispers of faith echo through the ages here at Stepps Parish Church. A testament to enduring belief, this church stands as a beacon in the heart of Stepps. Stepps Parish Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living story, woven from the threads of community, faith, and architectural brilliance. Stepps Parish Church celebrated its centenary in 2000, marking over a century of service to the community. Born from the union of St Andrew’s Parish Church and Whitehill Parish Church in 1983, Stepps Parish Church is now the sole Church of Scotland congregation serving Stepps, Cardowan, Millerston, Crowwood, and Frankfield. The church shares a bond of fellowship with St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Cardowan and the United Free Church in Millerston, partnering in their shared mission to serve Jesus. The church’s striking architecture is the work of renowned Scottish architect, Peter MacGregor Chalmers. Known for his designs of religious buildings across Scotland, Chalmers envisioned Stepps Parish Church as a reflection of the village’s scale and simplicity. Built in the form of a cross, the church’s red Ballochmyle sandstone echoes the style of other Chalmers churches, like St Margaret’s Polmadie and St Andrew’s Kirn. Chalmers’ legacy extends beyond new constructions, including his involvement in the restoration of Iona Abbey and Paisley Abbey. Sadly, he passed away while working on the Paisley Abbey project, his final resting place marked by a simple headstone in Glasgow Necropolis. Stepps Parish Church has faced its share of challenges, particularly with the Glasgow Presbytery Plan. However, the congregation transformed these challenges into opportunities, discovering new ways to “Be Church” and embracing their “Take Stepps Mission Plan” to revitalize their Christian Discipleship. The church is constantly evolving, acknowledging the need for radical change in a post-Covid world. Stepps Parish Church stands ready to embrace new ways of service and worship, guided by the unwavering faith that has sustained it for over a century. Its doors remain open, welcoming all to share in its legacy of faith, community, and architectural beauty.
