Considering a place to rest your head off North Freeway? Let me introduce you to the Town Inn of Houston. While this spot may seem like just another place to stay, Houston itself has a story etched in time.

Houston’s story began in 1836. Real estate promoters John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen sought a new town site. They purchased land near the junction of Buffalo and White Oak bayous. They named it after Sam Houston. He was a significant figure in Texas history.

The Allen brothers advertised their town. They highlighted its location as a logistical center. Houston became the temporary capital of the Republic of Texas. The first steamship arrived in 1837. It had twelve residents and one log cabin. Soon, the town grew rapidly. It had 1,500 people and 100 houses within four months.

Early Houston faced challenges. Drunkenness and brawling were common. The city established a Chamber of Commerce in 1840. Its purpose was to address financial problems. Yellow fever outbreaks also plagued the city.

Despite these early struggles, Houston persisted. Railroads began connecting Houston in the 1850s. This boosted transportation and jobs. During the Civil War, Houston served the Confederacy as a regional military logistics center. The population increased as blockade runners used the town.

After the Civil War, Houston continued to grow. It added new wards to its municipal structure. The city became an official port of entry in 1870. Houston hosted the first Texas State Fair that same year.

The population boomed in the late 19th century. People sought job opportunities. Houston’s growth continued into the 20th century. The devastating Galveston Hurricane of 1900 spurred further development in Houston. Oil companies established offices here.

The establishment of NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, now the Johnson Space Center, further propelled Houston’s prominence. This cemented Houston’s place in space exploration history. The phrase “Houston, we have a problem” became iconic.

Today, Houston stands as a diverse city. It has a vibrant cultural scene. Houston boasts a renowned Museum District and Theater District. The city embraces its history while driving innovation.

The Town Inn stands as a part of this evolving metropolis. It offers a place to pause. Here you can reflect on Houston’s remarkable journey.
