Pause for a moment. Imagine students strolling to Tsinghua University. Picture them heading to Yenching University in the early 20th century. Haidian was becoming a university district. Lao She mentioned it in his novel Camel Xiangzi. He called it an academic village for students.

After the People’s Republic formed, Haidian changed again. Institutions moved from Yan’an. The area was developed into a university center. In June 1954 Haidian officially became a district.
