Across the Elbe, Ochsenwerder beckons. This tranquil suburb, part of Hamburg’s Bergedorf district, whispers tales of a rich past. Ochsenwerder is steeped in history. Its name, first mentioned in 1254 as “Oswerthere,” hints at its agricultural heritage. “Ochsen” meaning oxen, and “Werder” meaning river island, paints a picture of a fertile land where oxen grazed freely.

Ochsenwerder’s story begins in the 12th century. By 1231, the land was being diligently diked and cultivated. The river Elbe flows through its heart, a natural border between Hamburg and Lower Saxony. Imagine the early settlers, transforming the marshland into productive farmland. They brought prosperity to the area, cultivating vegetables, flowers, and other crops that fed the growing city of Hamburg.

Ochsenwerder became part of Hamburg in 1395. The city purchased the land from the Count of Holstein to secure its interests in Elbe shipping. This strategic acquisition proved vital for Hamburg’s growth as a major port city. However, Ochsenwerder’s peaceful existence was often disrupted by conflict. In 1686, Braunschweig-Lüneburg troops ransacked the area. The Napoleonic Wars brought further hardship in the early 19th century. Despite these challenges, the people of Ochsenwerder persevered.

Today, Ochsenwerder retains its agricultural character. Many farms now embrace organic practices, supplying fresh produce to the region. The Demeter Gärtnerei Sannmann, a family-run business with over 200 years of history, exemplifies this commitment to sustainable agriculture. They even cultivate heirloom tomato varieties like the Vierländer Platte. Imagine the vibrant colors and rich flavors of these locally grown tomatoes.

Ochsenwerder is more than just farms. The Hohendeicher See, also known as Oortkatensee, draws visitors for swimming, surfing, and fishing. The former Marschbahn railway embankment now serves as a scenic path for cyclists and skaters. And for a unique overnight experience, consider Hamburgs erstes Fasshotel, where you can sleep in a converted wine barrel.

Ochsenwerder is a testament to resilience and community. The St. Pankratius Church, built in 1674, and the 1634 Pastorat stand as symbols of the area’s enduring spirit. They form a picturesque ensemble around the Pastorenbrack, a reminder of Ochsenwerder’s rich history. From its agricultural roots to its modern-day appeal as a recreational destination, Ochsenwerder offers a captivating glimpse into Hamburg’s diverse landscape.
