Yong’an Road Flyover

“Nine days.” The hushed words rippled through our tour group as we stood beneath the Yong’an Road Flyover. “They took down a whole flyover, bigger than this one, in just nine days.” Shenzhen. A city synonymous with speed. And this city’s rapid transformation is perfectly encapsulated in stories like the demolition of the Huangmugang Flyover. It wasn’t just a feat of engineering, but a testament to the meticulous planning and sheer manpower that defines Shenzhen’s spirit. The Yong’an Road Flyover, standing here before us, reminds us of that “Shenzhen speed”. While not directly involved in the Huangmugang Flyover demolition, it represents the same ambition and efficiency. The Huangmugang Flyover, a complex web of five bridges stretching over 1,500 meters, was dismantled in a mere nine days during the Chinese New Year of 2019. A project of this scale would typically take six months. 1,500 workers labored day and night, a dedicated team amidst the holiday reunions. Imagine the coordinated ballet of 30 cranes, their movements precisely choreographed, a symphony of steel against the backdrop of a city celebrating new beginnings. At the heart of this operation was cutting-edge technology. BIM, or Building Information Modeling, allowed engineers to create a digital twin of the flyover, simulating every stage of demolition with painstaking detail. This digital dress rehearsal minimized on-site surprises and ensured the safety of the workers. But the real game-changer was the deployment of SPMTs, self-propelled modular transporters. These behemoths, capable of carrying immense loads, moved sections of the dismantled flyover with controlled precision. 240 axles of SPMTs, representing a fifth of China’s entire SPMT fleet, were mobilized for this project—an unprecedented feat in Chinese construction history. Even during the festive season, the city’s leaders remained engaged, visiting the site and acknowledging the workers’ dedication. The Yong’an Road Flyover, a silent witness to this incredible feat, stands as a reminder of Shenzhen’s remarkable ability to transform its landscape with breathtaking speed and precision. This city never sleeps, and its infrastructure is a living testament to its restless ambition.
