In 1869, amidst the swirling changes of the Meiji Restoration, Kyoto City established 64 ward schools. One of these was the 上京第三番組小学校, later known as 市立翔鸞小学校. Shoran Elementary, as it’s also called, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of education in this ancient city. The name “Shoran” itself carries a whisper of history. It is believed to be taken from the Shoran-kaku, a building that was once part of the Heian Palace’s Otenmon gate complex. Imagine children learning within the shadow of imperial history. Shoran Elementary’s journey began in the year of its founding, 1869, at a location in Daimonji-cho. Years later, in 1908, the school moved to its current location in the Shoran district of Kyoto. The school has seen many transformations. In 1877, it was renamed simply “Shoran”. Later, in 1886, it became Shoran Island Regular Elementary School. For a time, it even housed a higher department, becoming Shoran Island Regular Higher Elementary School in 1912. Through the tumultuous years of war and peace, Shoran Elementary adapted. It became Kyoto City Shoran National School in 1941. Finally, in 1947, it assumed its present name: Kyoto City Shoran Elementary School. Today, Shoran Elementary remains a vital part of the Shoran district. This district, nestled in northwest Kyoto, is rich in historical and cultural sites. It boasts the serene Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, founded in 947. The nearby Daikoku-en Temple houses a statue of Jizo Bosatsu, a protector of children and travelers, fitting company for a school. The district also holds traces of the opulent Kitano Ochanoyu, the grand tea ceremony hosted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587. Perhaps the echoes of these historical events still resonate within Shoran Elementary’s walls. Shoran Elementary continues to educate and inspire the children of Kyoto, carrying the legacy of over 150 years of history.
