Holywell Ford House

In 1888, a whisper of the past echoed through Holywell Ford as Clapton Crabb Rolfe completed a magnificent new house, Holywell Ford House. This house, built in the seventeenth-century style, stands proudly within the grounds of Magdalen College today. Holywell Ford House sits on land steeped in history, a place where a mill has stood since at least 1200. Magdalen College itself, a prestigious institution within the University of Oxford, acquired Holywell Ford House in the 1970s. The college, with its rich history and stunning architecture, offers a fascinating backdrop to Holywell Ford House’s more recent origins. Originally, the mill was owned by Merton College, finally transferring ownership to Balliol College in 1930. A unique period for Holywell Ford House was in the mid-20th century, when the renowned historian A. J. P. Taylor called it home. Even the famed writer Dylan Thomas shared this space, lodging with Taylor. Imagine the conversations, the ideas exchanged within these walls. Magdalen College incorporated the Holywell Ford site into a new development in the 1990s, expanding its reach northward and solidifying Holywell Ford House’s place within its academic embrace. This expansion included additional accommodation blocks built in 1994-5. Today, Holywell Ford House remains a quiet testament to its rich past, nestled within the vibrant academic community of Magdalen College.
