The merger. That’s what shaped Gethsemane Baptist Church and School. Two separate groups united. This is where their stories intertwine.

Gethsemane Baptist Church and School in Los Angeles has a rich history. It’s a testament to faith and community. It began with two independent churches. Christian Love Baptist Church started in 1954. It met in the home of Reverend and Mrs Bert Collins. Another group of believers gathered in 1955. They met in Sarah Posey’s home. Neither group knew of the other.

In 1963 these two groups merged. They formed the church we see today. Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church became their name. Rev Charlie Jackson was the pastor. He led the church for many years. The church grew. It needed a bigger space. They moved several times. Finally they built a new building on Avalon Boulevard. Unfortunately the construction was interrupted. Pastor Jackson faced difficulties. Some members left. In 1974 Pastor Jackson passed away.

Despite challenges the church persevered. In 1985 a remarkable vision unfolded. Pastor Jackson traveled to Africa. He established a daycare center there. He also led several trips to Africa and the Holy Land. He even shared his experiences at Oxford University in 2004. His leadership impacted many.

After Pastor Jackson’s passing the church appointed an interim pastor. Rev Benny Lee Patrick Jr served from 2011 to 2013. He helped the congregation adjust. Then in 2013 Pastor Andre Chapple Sr took over. He focused on growth and ministry development.

In 2022 Bishop Byron L Smith Sr became the pastor. He’s continued the church’s legacy. The church has seen growth in membership and attendance. New ministries and programs have been added. Bishop Smith’s focus includes community outreach. They have vaccination clinics food and clothing drives. They truly are a church pressing on with Christian love. Gethsemane Baptist Church and School stands as a beacon. It reflects the enduring power of faith and community. This place is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the spirit of perseverance.
