Hidden within Kyoto’s embrace lies Komyoin Temple. It’s a place of serenity, a sanctuary tucked away from the bustling crowds. Komyoin was established in 1391 by Myoichiro Kinzan as a sub-temple of Tofukuji Temple. It served as the head tower, known as a tatchu, for Tofukuji. Komyoin is also affectionately referred to as the “rainbow moss temple,” a testament to the harmonious blend of moss and sand found within its gardens. A key feature of Komyoin is its stunning rock garden, Hashin-no-niwa. Created in 1939 by the renowned garden designer Shigemori Mirei, the garden provides a space for quiet contemplation. The garden holds symbolic meaning, representing the vast ocean and the three Buddhist principles of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha through three stone groupings. The name “Hashin-no-niwa” itself carries a profound message. It translates to, “We can see the moon on the surface of water when we have no clouds.” This signifies that a clear mind, free from distractions, can perceive Buddhist teachings as clearly as the moon reflected on still water. Within Komyoin rests a golden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. The Luogetsuan tea house, built in 1956, offers a unique vantage point. Its circular elements, when viewed from the Hashin garden, resemble the moon rising in the eastern sky, connecting to the imagery of Marishiten, sometimes depicted riding the moon, and reinforcing the temple’s themes of peace and enlightenment. Komyoin is more than just a temple. It’s a place where the whispers of history intertwine with the serenity of nature, offering a haven for reflection and a glimpse into the profound beauty of Buddhist philosophy.
