Antioch Baptist Church began not as a church but as the Anti-Yoke Society. Imagine former slaves pooling their meager resources creating a burial society. This was their insurance policy a lifeline in a world that offered them little. They chose the name Anti-Yoke a powerful symbol of their newfound freedom. It meant breaking free from the chains of slavery. The yoke of oppression was gone.

Under the leadership of Anthony Gloster the group purchased land. They built a simple structure a shack really. But it served as both a meeting place and a church. It was the only Black church for miles. The congregation grew. They needed a bigger space. Their faith was unshakeable. They persevered.

The society’s building was used for church services. The Congregation of the Anti-Yoke held regular services in that humble space. It wasn’t grand but it was theirs. This tiny church served a vast community. It was their spiritual home.

In 1890 the church was renamed Antioch Baptist Church becoming the first Black church in the area. Rev Thomas Allen a former slave himself served as its first pastor for an incredible 48 years. Many of the original members’ last names are still found in the church’s current membership. Their legacy lives on.

The church faced many challenges. Growth meant needing even bigger spaces. Rev Ferdinand Gaines Jr faced the challenge of expanding the church’s reach. He led the church through a period of phenomenal growth. In 1999 and 2005 new complexes were dedicated. The church expanded its services to reach the community. They established numerous ministries supporting everything from education to prison outreach.

Even a global pandemic couldn’t stop the faith. In 2020 the church moved to virtual services. They adapted persevered and continued their ministry. The spirit of Antioch Baptist Church proved resilient. Their faith shone brightly even in the darkest times.
