In 1857, a grand vision began to take shape in Glasgow’s Cathcart suburb. Holmwood House, a testament to the genius of architect Alexander “Greek” Thomson, started its journey from blueprint to reality. Commissioned by paper manufacturer James Couper, Holmwood House was more than just a residence. It was a statement, a reflection of Couper’s success and his appreciation for innovative design. The house, completed in 1858 for the considerable sum of £3,682, offered breathtaking views of Cathcart Castle. Holmwood House showcased Thomson’s signature Greek Revival style. The house’s design, with its asymmetrical layout and striking dome, became immensely influential, even inspiring proto-modernist architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. Inside Holmwood House, the polychromatic decorations, designed by Thomson himself and executed by Campbell Tait Bowie, told stories of their own. The dining room’s frieze, featuring enlarged panels from John Flaxman’s illustrations of Homer’s Iliad, brought epic tales to life. A fireplace sculpted by George Mossman added a touch of grandeur to the hall. Holmwood House has seen its share of changes over the years. James Gray altered it in the 1920s. After World War II, the McElhone family called it home. Later, the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions acquired the property, unfortunately covering much of the original decoration. Thankfully, Holmwood House was rescued from potential development in the 1990s by the National Trust for Scotland, supported by a substantial grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund. Meticulously restored by PagePark Architects, Holmwood House stands today as a beautifully preserved example of Thomson’s architectural mastery. It is a place where history whispers from every corner, from the restored dome, featured on a £20 Clydesdale Bank note in 1999, to the vibrant friezes that once again adorn the walls. Holmwood House is a must-see, a journey back to a time of grand visions and enduring artistry.
