A steep path. That’s what Ermesinde means. This unassuming town nestled near Porto holds a history far richer than its modest appearance suggests. Ermesinde was once known as Sao Lourenco de Asmes. Its name changed officially in 1910 after the Republic was established. Before that in 1911 the parish council requested the name change to Ermezinde.

The origins of Ermesinde are shrouded in mystery. Some say the name originates from a Germanic word meaning “steep path”. Others believe it stems from Dona Ermezenda. She was a daughter of Don Gundezindo. In 890 she was a benefactor to the Benedictine convent in Rio Tinto. Her lands two kilometers from that convent became the heart of what we know as Ermesinde today.

Documents from 1258 mention an individual from Ermesinde. This person provided information about common lands near Maia. This shows Ermesinde existed long before its official renaming. A document from the 11th century speaks of the Aguas Santas convent owning land in Sao Lourenco de Azomes. This included what is now Ermesinde. The town’s name evolved from Azomes (1258) to Azenes (1519) and Açomes (1706) before settling on Ermesinde.

The arrival of the Douro and Minho railway lines in 1875 transformed Ermesinde. The railway chose a relatively unpopulated area for a junction. The station’s location boosted Ermesinde’s growth. Its name became more prominent than Sao Lourenco de Asmes. Ermesinde grew quickly around the new railway station.

In 1938 Ermesinde was declared a Vila. Then in 1979 an administrative district encompassing Ermesinde and Alfena was created. Finally in 1990 Ermesinde was elevated to city status. It is a testament to the town’s resilience and growth. From a small settlement to a thriving city. Ermesinde’s journey is a microcosm of Portugal’s own transformation. A quiet history unfolds. A town’s journey from humble beginnings to a vibrant modern city. This is Ermesinde.
