Have you ever imagined washing a horse fit for an emperor? Here at Liangma River, such a scene was once commonplace. Liangma River, whose name translates to “bright horse river,” wasn’t always the pleasant waterway we see today. It began humbly as a series of pools and ditches near the imperial stables in Dongba. This was back in the 15th century, shortly after Emperor Yongle declared Beijing the capital of the Ming Dynasty. The location was chosen for its proximity to several waterways and the Tonghui Canal, which eventually led to the Grand Canal. Before being presented to the emperor or brought to the city’s horse markets, the royal steeds needed a proper cleaning. So, handlers would bring them to these pools, scrubbing them until they shone in the sun. After their bath, the horses would dry off in the sun along the dirt road leading to Dongzhimen Gate. The name Liangma River evolved from this practice: “liang” (bright) from the gleaming horses, “ma” (horse) from the animals themselves, and “he” (river) from the nearby waterways. Over time, “liang” (bright) replaced the original word “bailiang,” meaning “to dry in the sun”. Liangma River’s purpose shifted over the centuries. In the 20th century, Liangma River became a drainage canal, then sadly, an open sewer. Finally, thanks to extensive restoration efforts, it transformed into the beautiful urban oasis we enjoy today. The river banks are now popular with joggers, kayakers, and those seeking a peaceful stroll. This transformation is truly remarkable, considering the river’s humble origins as a horse bath. So, the next time you visit Liangma River, remember its unique history. Imagine the imperial horses, freshly bathed and glistening in the sun, a testament to the river’s fascinating past.
