Amidst the urban sprawl of Beijing, Tiantongyuan stands as a testament to modern China’s rapid development. This massive residential area, sometimes called Asia’s largest, pulses with the energy of nearly 400,000 residents. Tiantongyuan wasn’t always this bustling metropolis. Before 1999, this area was known as Taipingzhuang, a name meaning “peaceful village.” When the ShuntianTong Real Estate Development Group began constructing this massive community, they initially planned to keep the name Taipingzhuang. However, the name was already common in Beijing. So, they decided to name it Tiantongyuan after the development company itself. Tiantongyuan is actually a collection of smaller districts. These include Tiantongyuan East, West, and North, along with a central area. Each of these is further divided into numbered sub-districts, creating a complex network of neighborhoods. Tiantongyuan is one of Beijing’s largest affordable housing projects. It plays a crucial role in accommodating the city’s growing population. Its sheer scale is impressive, covering eight square kilometers. The planned building area encompasses over six million square meters. This “sleeping city,” as it’s sometimes called, is intertwined with Huilongguan, another large residential development. Together, they form a sprawling residential landscape on the outskirts of the city center. The construction of Tiantongyuan began in a period of rapid economic growth and urbanization in China. It reflects the country’s efforts to address the housing needs of its citizens. To get around Tiantongyuan and connect to the rest of Beijing, the city’s subway system is essential. Line 5 provides access to Tiantongyuan station, as well as South and North Tiantongyuan stations. Line 17 serves the eastern part of Tiantongyuan with a dedicated station. As you wander through Tiantongyuan, consider the stories of those who call this place home. From young professionals to families and retirees, this community represents a microcosm of modern Chinese society.
