Evergreens, often decorated for the holidays, frame our story at Clawson Playground. This playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a tribute to a family that helped shape Staten Island.

Clawson Playground was named in honor of the Clawson family. They were a prominent Staten Island clan. Their story began in the late 18th century. Twenty-seven Clawsons rest at the nearby Church of St. Andrew’s. Their stories are recorded in a book there.

Jonathan Clawson built the Clawson Homestead in 1795. Reuben Clawson later enlarged it in 1825. He lived there until his death in 1872. The family’s roots run deep in this land.

This area transformed over time. In the late 19th century, it was a seaside resort. The early 20th century brought development. Streets were laid out from 1st Street to Mill Road. Others stretched from Oak Avenue to Brook and Elm. The numbered streets met avenues named after trees and women. The area became known as Oakwood. This name came from the development company.

The City acquired this land on April 21, 1955. Clawson Playground opened on June 29, 1959. Since then, it has served the community. Students from P.S. 50 and local residents enjoy its facilities.

Clawson Playground offers varied recreation. There is a grassy playing field. An asphalt ball field invites games. Basketball courts are ready for play. An outdoor classroom provides space for learning.

Today, Clawson Playground remains a vital part of the community. It’s a place for children of all ages. There is a baseball field and basketball hoops. A play unit and jungle gym offer fun challenges. An open grassy field provides space to run. It is a peaceful spot. It is rarely crowded. Public School 50 shares the space during school hours. As you explore, remember the Clawson family. They are part of Staten Island’s history. Their legacy lives on in this playground.
