Purchased from the Lenape in 1677 Mantua’s story begins long before its official naming. William Warner a European settler acquired a significant portion of what would become Mantua. This land later changed hands. Judge Richard Peters played a pivotal role. In 1809 he designed a grid of lots. He named this area Mantua after an Italian city. Initially a predominantly white Lutheran neighborhood Mantua’s demographics shifted dramatically. By the 1940s and 50s Black families began moving into the area. Haverford Avenue once boasted a thriving commercial district. This era witnessed the peak of the neighborhood’s prosperity.
The 1960s brought a surge in gang violence. Six major Philadelphia gangs controlled parts of Mantua. Gang activity contributed to high crime rates. Despite these challenges community leaders emerged. Herman Wrice and Andrew Jenkins formed the Young Great Society and the Mantua Community Planners. These groups organized daily activities. Activities included arts and crafts vocal groups and tutoring. Their dedication fostered community unity amidst adversity. They even worked with the Philadelphia Police Department. They aimed to keep youth away from gang life.
The Mantua Community Center opened in the 1970s. This center included playgrounds ball courts and a library. A library card was even required for access. This speaks volumes about its importance. The center served as a crucial community hub. It was a place for recreation and learning. The 1980s brought challenges. Crack cocaine fueled gang wars. Many residents left. Vacant lots became widespread.
The 1990s and beyond witnessed a gradual revitalization. Abandoned buildings were renovated. Affordable housing attracted Drexel University students. In 1995 the Mantua library branch was renamed for Charles L. Durham. Durham was a community advocate and civil rights activist. The library’s renovation in 1999 modernized it. It ensured adequate internet access. Today Mantua continues to evolve. It shows resilience and a dedication to progress. The area’s history shows the strength of its community. It demonstrates the enduring spirit of Mantua.
