A weathered brick building stands before you. This is the Appenzeller-Noble Memorial Museum. It quietly tells a story of education and faith in Korea.

The Appenzeller-Noble Memorial Museum isn’t just a museum. It’s a living testament to the legacy of Henry G Appenzeller. This American missionary arrived in Korea in 1885. He established Pai Chai Hakdang. This was Korea’s first Western-style educational institute. The museum resides in the East Hall of this historic school.

Appenzeller believed in education above all else. He opened an English-language school in his home. This humble beginning blossomed into a prestigious institution. Pai Chai Hakdang later received its official name from King Gojong in 1887.

The museum showcases Pai Chai Hakdang’s rich history. It includes classrooms and exhibition halls. One classroom replicates a 1930s classroom. It features a video on Appenzeller’s philosophy. He believed in well-rounded individuals each with a special talent. Many Korean elites studied at Pai Chai Hakdang. These included Korea’s first president Syngman Rhee. Scholar Ju Si-gyeong and poet Kim Sowol were also alumni.

The exhibition halls hold fascinating artifacts. There are travel essays by Yu Kil-chun. You’ll also see the sign King Gojong gave the school. Textbooks printed by students in a work-study program are on display. These students couldn’t afford tuition. A first edition of Kim Sowol’s Azaleas is a highlight. Harvard professor David McCann has visited twice to see it. The museum also houses a grand piano. This Bluthner piano from 1864 was Korea’s first imported piano.

The museum’s upper floor holds Appenzeller’s diary and personal belongings. It commemorates his contributions. Photos from graduation albums offer a glimpse into student life. Some pictures are from a field trip to Gyeongju. Others depict life during Japanese colonization. Despite hardship the students’ faces show resilience. Experts believe this reflects their desire for a better Korea.

The Appenzeller-Noble Memorial Museum is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a journey through time. It’s a celebration of education and faith. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Henry G Appenzeller and his impact on Korea’s history. Take your time. Explore the exhibits. Absorb the stories within these walls. The Appenzeller-Noble Memorial Museum awaits you.
