“Who exactly was Paul S. Beideman?” I imagine someone asking. This area is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to leadership and dedication.

Avenue of the Arts Inc. announced Paul S. Beideman’s retirement in 2021. He had served as President and CEO. His contributions shaped Philadelphia’s cultural landscape.

Beideman’s journey began long before his role here. He started his banking career in 1971. He worked at the Philadelphia Savings Society. Later, he became Senior Vice President of Community Banking.

In 1989, Beideman joined Mellon Bank. He rose to Chairman of Mellon’s Mid-Atlantic Region. He also became Executive Vice President of Retail Financial Services. He was a member of Mellon’s Senior Management Committee too.

Before dedicating his time to the Avenue of the Arts, Beideman was President and CEO of Associated Banc-Corp. It was a $35 billion institution based in Wisconsin. He served there from 2003 to 2012.

His commitment to Philadelphia is evident. As President and CEO of Avenue of the Arts Inc., Beideman focused on three key priorities. These were capital reinvestment, cleanliness and safety and marketing outreach.

New intersections and crosswalks appeared at Chestnut. Sansom, Moravian and Walnut Streets also saw improvements. Landscaping efforts enhanced the Avenue’s appeal. Upgraded lighting created a more inviting atmosphere.

Under Beideman’s leadership, the Friends of the Avenue of the Arts expanded. It grew to over 2500 members. The annual Visionary Award gala was established too.

Beyond his professional achievements, Beideman contributed to education. He and his wife Caroline established the Beideman Visiting Scholar program at Widener University. He also chaired Widener University’s Board of Trustees.

His dedication extended to numerous nonprofits. He served on the boards of the Philadelphia Zoo. He was also on the boards of Philadelphia Academies and the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition. His service included the Make A Wish Foundation. He served on the President’s Council of the Natural Lands Trust as well.

Paul S. Beideman’s impact is still felt today. The Avenue of the Arts continues to thrive. It remains a testament to his vision and leadership. The Avenue generates over $1 billion annually. It attracts more than 2.5 million visitors each year. It plays a vital role in Philadelphia’s cultural vitality.

So, as we stand here, remember Paul S. Beideman. Remember his dedication shaped this vibrant space. He is a true visionary. His legacy enriches Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts.
