Have you ever heard of a church that started with a prayer band of eight women? It’s a story that begins in the cozy embrace of Emma Mockabee’s home, back in 1918. It was Betty Henry who gave this group their name, The Nazarene Mission. The first services were held right there in her home, a humble beginning for what would become the renowned Nazarene Baptist Church. They faced many challenges and relocated several times, but their spirit never wavered. In 1919, Rev. Baxter Barnett was called to lead the congregation, and with the support of dedicated members, he delivered the first organized service of the Nazarene Baptist Church. Their growth continued under the guidance of several pastors, each one adding to the church’s fabric and shaping its ministry. A significant moment in their history arrived in March of 1989, when Larry A Rascoe, Sr. took the reins of leadership. He oversaw a period of growth and expansion for the Nazarene Baptist Church. Two morning worship services were established, and in 2004, a Christian Education wing was added to the church building. A particularly inspiring initiative was Joshua Academy Charter School and Preschool, born from Pastor Rascoe’s vision. The Nazarene Baptist Church has celebrated 100 years of service, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
