A hushed reverence hangs in the air. This is the New Apostolic Church in Johannesburg. Its story begins not in grand pronouncements but in a quiet courtroom drama.

Picture this: 1926. A legal battle unfolds. Two factions of the New Apostolic Church in Africa clash. The dispute concerns leadership. Carl Georg Klibbe and George Hendrik Wilhelm Schlaphoff are the central figures. This wasn’t simply a disagreement over doctrine. It was a fight for the very soul of the church in South Africa.

The New Apostolic Church had deep roots. Founded in Germany in 1830 its influence spread. In 1892 a branch took root in South Africa. The structure was hierarchical. The Apostle College the central authority ruled. Klibbe a prominent figure in the South African branch had been appointed Apostle in 1908.

The conflict simmered for years. In 1913 Klibbe was removed from his post. He refused to accept this. He refused to relinquish his position. Schlaphoff his rival was appointed as his successor. Klibbe’s defiance led to his excommunication in 1915.

But the story doesn’t end there. Klibbe refused to back down. He rallied his followers. They broke away. They formed their own independent church. This became known as the Old Apostolic Church of Africa.

The 1926 court case brought a resolution. The court acknowledged that Klibbe’s group had severed ties with the original church in Germany. Klibbe and his followers agreed to relinquish the name New Apostolic Church. They would instead be known as the Old Apostolic Church of Africa. Schlaphoff was recognized as the leader of the New Apostolic Church in South Africa. This marked a pivotal point in the history of the New Apostolic Church. It ensured two distinct entities in South Africa.
