Can you imagine a golf course that was once a nine-hole operation with sand greens? Well, Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston has a history reaching back to the early 1900s. The course was built near the hospital at Camp Logan for convalescent soldiers. The year was 1912. After the hospital closed in 1935, golf course architect John Bredemus redesigned Memorial Park Golf Course. The redesigned golf course opened in July 1936. According to legend, Bredemus remarked that this was his “greatest golf course ever.” Memorial Park Golf Course hosted the Houston Open from 1951 to 1963. In 1994, Nancy Reynolds, a Houston Park Board member, began a campaign to restore the golf course. The goal was to preserve the historical quality of the course while allowing for proper maintenance. In 1995, the newly renovated 600-acre course opened with a lighted driving range, putting and chipping greens, and a beautiful new clubhouse. Memorial Park Golf Course is now known as one of the best municipal courses in the nation. It welcomes over 60,000 patrons each year. It’s a testament to Bredemus’s vision that the course still stands today. You’ll find yourself surrounded by the rich history of this course, its legacy of golfers, and the passionate community that continues to enjoy it.
