Eight families. That’s all it took to shape the destiny of Yancun. Here in the eastern part of Fangshan District, Beijing, the echoes of their arrival still resonate. Yancun. A town born from the ambition of eight families surnamed Yan who migrated here from Zhuozhou during the reign of the Yongle Emperor. Imagine those early settlers, establishing their lives in this new land. They probably never dreamed that their humble village, named after their shared surname meaning “Yan Village”, would one day become the sprawling town of 77,621 residents that Yancun is today. Yancun has seen numerous transformations throughout its history. In 1916, it was just a small part of the 8th Northern District of Liangxiang County. The decades that followed brought significant administrative shifts. Yancun transitioned through various townships and communes. Its name even underwent a slight modification in 2008, solidifying its identity as the Yancun we know today. Today, Yancun boasts a blend of urban and rural life. Eight communities and twenty-two villages exist within Yancun town. These are places with names like Liyuan Dongli and Da Zicaowu, each contributing to the tapestry of Yancun’s identity. As you stand here, imagine the generations that have walked these streets before you. From the eight Yan families who first established this settlement, to the bustling community that thrives here today, Yancun’s story is a testament to the enduring power of family and community.
