Saint Paul AME Church

Did you know that Saint Paul AME Church has a history of supporting Black-owned businesses? The church’s Black Business Initiative actively promotes and empowers entrepreneurs in the community. Saint Paul AME Church isn’t just a place of worship, it’s a cornerstone of the community. The church has served Detroit for over 100 years. The current building, erected in 1953, was once the largest Black-built church in the nation. This magnificent structure, seating over 1,500 people, was a symbol of pride, designed by Black architects and constructed with the help of Black tradesmen. In 1953, the congregation marched from their old location to this new edifice on Hunt and Chene, a powerful display of unity and progress. The church continues to host events that connect with the community, from children’s church and youth services to food pantries and business initiatives. The legacy of influential figures like Rev. J.A. Charleston resonates within these walls, a reminder of the church’s dedication to education, history, and Black pride.
