Is it possible that thirteen determined Christians could establish a church that thrives for over 80 years? Here at the Polite Temple Baptist Church, we witness a testament to faith and perseverance. Founded in 1940 by Reverend Collins Nichols Polite and twelve other devoted followers, Polite Temple Baptist Church initially took root on East Rittenhouse Street. The church’s name reflects its founder, Reverend Polite. As the congregation grew, so did their need for a larger space. This led them to relocate twice, first to 312 E. Rittenhouse Street and later to 210 E. Haines Street. In 1955, the Polite Temple Baptist Church found its permanent home at the historic First Baptist Church of Germantown building on 38 East Price Street. Reverend Polite led his congregation for 25 years until his passing in 1965. The leadership then transitioned to Rev. Collie Williams, who served until 1995. Polite Temple Baptist Church continued to flourish under Rev. Dr. Franklin Williamson Jr., who took the helm in 1991. He spearheaded numerous outreach programs, making the church a pillar of support for the community. In 2017, Rev. Bernadine Waterman made history by becoming the first female pastor of Polite Temple Baptist Church, marking a new chapter in the church’s inspiring journey. The enduring strength of Polite Temple Baptist Church lies in its commitment to faith and community, a legacy that continues to inspire today.
