“Columbus Village?” Few know that name now. It was the original name for what we know today as Columbus Square. This residential and commercial complex sits between 97th and 100th Streets. It lies between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues.

Columbus Square emerged as a vision to echo Columbus Circle. But it sought a contrasting identity. Developers chose “Square” to distinguish it from the famed circle.

In 2009, Columbus Square stood as Manhattan’s largest residential development. The five buildings that make up Columbus Square are 808 Columbus Avenue, 775 Columbus Avenue, 795 Columbus Avenue, 805 Columbus Avenue and 801 Amsterdam Avenue.

The retail space within Columbus Square is impressive. Winnick Realty leases it. A large Whole Foods Market anchors 808 Columbus Avenue. It opened in August 2009. Other retailers include TJ Maxx, Michael’s, Sephora, and Modell’s. Petco has also confirmed its lease.

Rumored tenants once included Crumbs Bakery and Borders Books. A community health center, the Ryan Center, has space in the complex. The Mandell School and the Solomon Schechter School of Manhattan are here too.

The tower at 808 Columbus Avenue has unique design features. Costas Kondylis and Partners, LLP designed it. These include valet parking and a lobby. Residents enjoy a lounge with a fireplace. A catering kitchen and fitness center are available. There is even a children’s playroom. Bicycle storage and a media center add to the appeal.

Andrés Escobar designed the interiors. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer great views. Soundproof oak floors ensure quiet. Washer-dryers are included. Stainless-steel appliances and CaesarStone countertops add to the modern feel.

The 29-story tower at 808 Columbus Avenue opened in May 2009. It offered 359 residential units. The remaining buildings were scheduled for completion by October 2010. Columbus Square has truly reshaped this part of the Upper West Side.
