Plaza San Vicente de Paul. A simple name for a place steeped in history. Before us stands the Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Madrid.

This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living story. A story that began long ago when the community needed a place of worship. It’s a story of construction and dedication. The original building was crafted in a style that blends the neogothic with the Mudejar. This unique architectural style reflects a rich and diverse heritage. The building’s façade was once adorned with a stunning ceramic work by Daniel Zuloaga. Sadly time has taken its toll. Today a mosaic replaces it. This mosaic depicts the Virgin Milagrosa along with San Vicente de Paúl and Santa Luisa de Marillac.

The Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl wasn’t immune to the ravages of war. The Spanish Civil War left it almost completely destroyed. Only the walls and remarkably the stained-glass windows survived. During the war the church even served as a cinema a strange contrast to its sacred purpose.

After the war’s end the church underwent a major restoration. This restoration reflects the architectural styles and limited resources of the postwar era. Later renovations brought the building into line with the changes prompted by the Second Vatican Council. A new chapel was added to provide space for special services and prayer.

In 1923 a significant event took place. Pope Pius XI bestowed upon the church the title of Basilica Minor. This was a remarkable honor. It reflected both the devotion of its congregation and the church’s importance to the community. Originally dedicated to San Vicente de Paúl. The church also became known as the Church of La Milagrosa due to the strong devotion to the Virgin Milagrosa. The devotees of La Milagrosa had their headquarters there. This dual dedication reflects the evolving religious landscape of the area.

The Parroquia San Vicente de Paúl stands as a symbol of faith resilience and community. It’s more than a place of worship. It’s a living history book. Its walls whisper stories of devotion sacrifice and rebirth. As we leave today. Let us remember the spirit of this place. Let us carry with us a piece of its enduring legacy.
