Beneath Seoul’s skyline, lies Sungui Girl’s Middle School. It is a place where determination and dreams intertwine. The story of Im Hyeon-suk is intertwined with Sungui Girl’s Middle School.
Picture Im Hyeon-suk. She was a student at Sungui Girl’s High School. She also attended Sungui Elementary School and Middle School. Her journey began on the ice. Im was a member of the ice skating team at Sungui Elementary School. This school was known as one of the “Big Three” ice skating schools. Lila Elementary School and Eunseok Elementary School were the others.
Im’s stamina set her apart. She tirelessly climbed Mount Namsan’s stairs. This demanding routine never wore her out. By the time she was a junior at Sungui Girls High School, Im had achieved national recognition. She won the 500-meter and 1000-meter events at the National Ice Skating Championship. This competition selected the national team for the Winter Olympics.
Im qualified for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. She was the youngest speed skater. A controversy within the Korea Skating Union dashed her Olympic dreams. Despite this setback, Im continued to dominate in Korea. She won the National Ice Skating Championship in 1981. She also excelled at the National University Ice Skating Competition in 1982. She continued her winning streak in 1983 and 1984.
At the end of 1984, Im transitioned to short track. She showcased her versatility by winning all four events at the first National Short Track Ice Skating Competition. She collapsed on the ice one time and was rushed to the hospital.
However, international success eluded her. She competed in the 1985 Winter Universiade in Italy without winning a medal. At the 1986 Asian Winter Games in Japan, she won a bronze medal in the 500-meter event.
Im Hyeon-suk’s story is one of resilience. Her journey began at Sungui Girl’s Middle School. It reminds us that dedication and perseverance can pave the way for future generations. It also reminds us of the importance of fair play and equal opportunity in sports.
