The name itself, derived from the Latin “Miratorium,” meaning “place of observation,” hints at its rich history. Miradolo Terme first appears in 12th-century documents. In 1164, Emperor Federico I granted Pavia jurisdiction over the region, including Miradolo Terme. This charming village, once part of the lower Pavese countryside, later belonged to the Belgioioso Vicariate. The Estensi family held control from 1475. Their reign eventually passed to the Barbiano di Belgioioso princes in 1757. Miradolo Terme’s story took a dramatic turn during the 15th-century French occupation. The village’s “castrum,” or fortress, was destroyed, but from its ruins arose the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in 1530. By the 1930s, Miradolo Terme was a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors seeking both relaxation and healing. This growth led to the official adoption of the name “Miradolo Terme” in 1938.
