Peeking out from behind the trees is Kaisanbashi. This unassuming bridge carries a wealth of history. Let’s uncover the secrets of this pedestrian bridge.

Kaisanbashi is a cyclist and pedestrian bridge. It spans the Ogawa River. It links Tenma in Kita Ward and Amijimacho in Miyakojima Ward. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the river. It echoes with stories of Osaka’s past.

In the Edo period, the area near Kaisanbashi was a bustling hub. A ferry service connected Tenma Kawasaki with Sakurajima. Nearby stood Kawasaki Higashi-shogu Shrine. People prayed here for the well-being of Ieyasu Tokugawa. There was also Kawasaki rice granary. It served as a town magistrate’s attached rice storage. Residences of the town magistrate and officers were located here.

In 1877, a private bridge was built. A toll of three rin per person was collected to cross it. People called it “Zenitori Bridge” because of the toll. However, this bridge was washed away in the great flood of 1885.

The current Kaisanbashi was constructed in 1978. It was part of a large-scale cycling route. This route connects Nakanoshima Park and Expo Memorial Park. The bridge has a unique design. It’s a two-span continuous cable-stayed bridge. Its length is 129.2 meters and width is 3 meters. It features high towers with cables supporting the girders.

Kaisanbashi received an award from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This award recognized its design. Its design minimizes vibrations for pedestrians. It harmonizes with the surrounding riverside park environment.

Near Kaisanbashi, you can experience Osaka’s vibrant culture. In spring, the Mint Bureau’s cherry blossom passage is nearby. In summer, the Tenjin Festival boat procession takes place. These events draw many visitors to Kaisanbashi.

As you stand on Kaisanbashi, take a moment. Imagine the history beneath your feet. From Edo period ferries to modern cycling routes, Kaisanbashi connects us to Osaka’s enduring spirit. It is more than just a bridge. It’s a testament to Osaka’s history. It is a link to its future.
