Is it just me, or does this temple radiate peace? We are standing before Joko Enmanji Temple. It is also known as Jodo Enmanji Temple or Enmanji Temple. This historic site opens daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Let’s explore the story of this serene place.

Joko Enmanji Temple has roots stretching back to 735 AD. Monk Gyoki founded it. Legend says Gyoki dreamt of a deity. The deity told him about sacred wood in Suita. Gyoki traveled to Suita and found the wood. He carved a statue of the Holy Kannon Bodhisattva from it. This marked the temple’s beginning.

Initially, the temple was near a beach. People called it “Iso-no-Tera” or “Hama-no-Tera.” This means “temple on the beach”. Over time, it became Gyoki’s preaching ground. The temple was named “Kojo-ji,” meaning “Temple of Constant Light.” This name came from the perpetual light symbolizing wisdom.

In 1178, something significant happened. A Buddhist image from nearby Enmanji Temple was moved here. The temple then adopted the name “Joko Enmanji Temple.”

During its peak, Joko Enmanji Temple was grand. It boasted seven halls including a medicine hall. Thirteen sub-temples stood within its grounds. Its land was vast. It was said to encompass an area large enough to hold four watchfires.

The temple became associated with powerful figures. The Ashikaga shogunate prayed here. The local Suita clan also supported it. They sought blessings and peace during turbulent times. The temple served as a place for ancestral veneration. It also offered solace in times of unrest.

Despite its past glory, Joko Enmanji Temple faced challenges. The Onin War in 1467 brought destruction. The temple burned down. It lost much of its extensive land.

Reconstruction occurred in 1671. Priest Kyohan led the efforts. Further repairs continued through the ages. The main hall we see today dates back to 1981.

Joko Enmanji Temple houses several cultural assets. These include a pagoda from 1801. Another pagoda dates back to 1815. Two lanterns from 1633 and 1854 are also preserved here. A painted screen depicts the temple. Wooden statues of Kannon and Jizo Bodhisattvas are enshrined. Ancient documents and temple records are also among its treasures.

The temple observes various annual events. On New Year’s Day, a grand Hannya-kyo reading takes place. A fire festival occurs on February 11th. Spring and autumn equinoxes are marked with special services. The Obon festival is celebrated in August. A Jizo Bodhisattva festival is also held. The year concludes with a striking of the bell on New Year’s Eve.

Joko Enmanji Temple stands as a testament. It shows resilience and spiritual devotion. It reflects the history of Suita and its people.
