Have you ever imagined stepping onto a campus that’s a living testament to the American dream? Right in front of us stands Atlanta Technical College, an institution that has been shaping lives and careers for almost eight decades. It all started in 1945, just after World War II, when the school opened its doors as Smith-Hughes Vocational School, focusing on adult education. The school was named after the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917, a federal law that funded vocational education in the United States. In the year 1964, it moved to Smith High School, and its name changed to Hoke Smith Technical Institute, honoring a former Governor of Georgia. Then in 1967, it moved to its current location and was renamed Atlanta Area Technical School, and in 1997, it became Atlanta Technical Institute. In 2000, the school finally earned its current name: Atlanta Technical College, a name that reflects its commitment to providing high-quality education to the Atlanta community. During this evolution, the school opened its South Campus in Forest Park, expanding its reach and offering new possibilities to students from both Fulton and Clayton counties. Today, Atlanta Technical College awards associate degrees, diplomas, and technical certificates of credit. It is a beacon of opportunity, offering a wide range of programs covering everything from aviation technology to health sciences. Even Delta Air Lines has donated a real aircraft engine to the school. And if you are thinking about a career in healthcare, there is no better place to start than right here. You can see the state-of-the-art Brenda Watts Jones Allied Health and Technology Complex. This building is a testament to the college’s commitment to preparing students for in-demand careers in the healthcare field. What started as a small vocational school has grown into a major force in the Atlanta community. Atlanta Technical College is a place where dreams take flight.
