Contrary to popular belief, the Bethany Baptist Church wasn’t always at its current location on Warrington Avenue. It actually started its journey quite humbly. The church’s early records were lost to time, leaving historians piecing together fragments of its past. However, oral accounts passed down through generations offer glimpses into those early days. They tell us that Bethany Baptist Church was founded by Reverend G.C. Coleman, a former pastor of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. There’s some debate about the exact year of its founding, with some accounts pointing to 1904 and others to 1910. What we do know for sure is that on a particular Sunday in May 1925, Bethany Baptist Church, comprised of just five faithful members, took a significant step. They gathered on the third floor of a building on Arch Street, near 56th, and called upon Reverend James H. Saunders to serve as their pastor. This marked a pivotal moment in the church’s history, setting the stage for its growth and impact in the Philadelphia community.
