Listen closely. A tale of architectural beauty and spiritual significance awaits us right here at the Ev.Christuskirche. This protestant church stands proudly in Mannheim’s Oststadt district. Known locally as Christuskirche, it represents the city’s rich history.

Let me introduce you to Ev.Christuskirche Mannheim. It is a masterpiece blending neobarque design with Jugendstil touches. Ev.Christuskirche was erected during Mannheim’s rapid population boom in the early 20th century. The expansion of the city created the necessity for a new protestant church.

Originally, planners wanted Ev.Christuskirche to stand on Friedrichsplatz. However, after a nearby catholic church was built, they chose Werderplatz instead. Christian Schrade, a young architect, brought the architectural vision to life. He took over the project after Theophil Frey, the competition winner, passed away. Construction began in 1907. This coincided with Mannheim’s 300th anniversary. The inauguration took place in 1911.

Remarkably, the Christuskirche survived both World Wars with minimal damage. This preserved its original charm. The 65-meter-high dome of the Christuskirche dominates the skyline. The design integrates elements of the Wiesbadener Program. This program emphasizes a central cupola structure. It avoids traditional separations between the choir and the nave.

Notice the exterior. It features bright yellow sandstone and green copper roofs. These reflect the vibrant colors of the late Jugendstil period. The main facade includes a large open portico. A triangular gable displays a relief by Ludwig Habich. It depicts Christ’s words: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden.” Matthew 11:28.

Stepping inside Ev.Christuskirche, visitors enter a generous space. It accommodates up to 1,700 people. The central crossing spans 23 meters. Four shallow arms of the cross surround it. This creates a feeling of openness. Altar, pulpit, and organ are aligned centrally. This reinforces the emphasis on communal worship.

Ornamental paintings decorate the coffered ceiling. Above the altar, a fresco by Adolf Schinnerer depicts the Resurrection. It adds an artistic touch. It had been restored after war damage in the 1950s. Benches are arranged radially. This ensures all eyes focus on the central altar.

Consider the artistic treasures within the Ev.Christuskirche. Four round towers support the dome. Each tower features winged symbols of the four evangelists. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Wilhelm Gerstel’s designs add symbolic depth.

Outside, statues of the twelve apostles encircle the dome’s tambour. Each figure reflects historical and religious importance. Inside, reliefs of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon greet visitors. These acknowledge the church’s protestant roots.

Ev.Christuskirche is more than a place of worship. It embodies the city’s architectural strength and historical depth. It represents faith, resilience, and community. It invites all to reflect on the past and embrace the future. The Ev.Christuskirche also features three organs. The Steinmeyer organ is one of Germany’s largest. It has 96 registers. The Marcussen organ has 31 registers. Finally, the Orgelpositiv has 5 registers.

The original peal had five bronze bells. They were the largest in Baden. In 1942, they confiscated the four largest bells. In 1956, they replaced them with new ones.
