Founded as a cultural association, Kalighat Milan Sangha stands before us a testament to Kolkata’s vibrant spirit. The story of Kalighat Milan Sangha began in 1944 in the heart of Kalighat. It has grown from a local club to a nationally recognized entity. Initially, it was just a cultural club. But with time, it expanded its activities significantly.
Kalighat Milan Sangha’s journey in football began in 1966. It gained a license from the Indian Football Association. By 1989, they had ascended to the first division of the Calcutta Football League marking a significant milestone.
The club’s rise continued. In 2009, Kalighat Milan Sangha secured a spot in the Calcutta Premier Division. A defining moment came in 2011 when they clinched the All Airlines Gold Cup. This victory remains one of their most cherished achievements.
In 2012, Kalighat Milan Sangha embraced professional football. They joined the I-League 2nd Division. They reached the final round that year. The club also competed in the 2013 I-League 2nd Division. In the 2014 Sikkim Gold Cup, Kalighat Milan Sangha displayed great skill. They reached the semi-finals but narrowly lost to Manang Marshyangdi of Nepal. They finished third in the final round of the 2014 I-League 2nd Division with 14 points from 8 matches. They reached the semi-finals of the Darjeeling Gold Cup in 2018. They also participated in the 2020 IFA Shield reaching the quarter-finals.
Beyond the football field, Kalighat Milan Sangha contributed to society. From May 2021, they offered free COVID-19 vaccinations in West Bengal. In July 2022, they showcased their talent in the Naihati Gold Cup. After being relegated in 2021, Kalighat MS bounced back. They won the 2022 season. This secured their promotion back to Premier Division A.
In June 2023, the Indian Football Association merged the Premier Divisions A and B. This allowed Kalighat MS to compete in Group I of the Calcutta Football League’s 125th edition. The club participated in the 40th edition of the Sikkim Gold Cup in November 2024.
Kalighat MS has a home. It has played matches at the Salt Lake Stadium. The Rabindra Sarobar Stadium also known as Lake Stadium with its 22000 capacity also hosts matches.
Kalighat Milan Sangha Football Club Private Limited owns the club. It was founded on November 18, 2011. Ajit Banerjee and Abesh Banerjee serve as board members.
The club also has a cricket section known as Kalighat Club. They compete in the Cricket Association of Bengal tournaments. Wriddhiman Saha opened a cricket coaching camp at the club in May 2018. This nurtured young talents. The club also supports a women’s cricket section.
Kalighat Milan Sangha launched its U19 team in 2014. They participated in the Elite League.
