Foreigners are welcome in Tobita Shinchi. However, some establishments may charge a surcharge. Cash is the only accepted form of payment. Prices vary depending on the duration. Fifteen minutes costs about ¥11,000.
One of the oldest buildings here, Taiyoshi Hyaku, gained cultural property status in 2000. Built in 1918, it was once a 21-room brothel. Later, it became a restaurant in 1970. Its themed rooms still retain their original form.
In 1912, a fire destroyed Osaka’s Namba district. This led to the relocation of brothels to Tobita Shinchi. Despite protests, it became one of the last licensed pleasure districts. It even survived World War II bombings.
